Virtual STEM Labs : Design, Production & Pedagogy
Lab experimentation is crucial to maturing inquiry in the sciences. DL has a unique challenge in bringing the practical and serendipitous experience of the lab to students via the Internet. At SIDES, we moved past the idea of pantomiming real-world labs and embraced a structure and delivery that plays to the web’s strengths while delivering on the core value-proposition of laboratory experience.

This presentation will show our results and discuss the design thinking that informed them. It will pay specific attention to connecting best-practice theory with practical implementation, with a focus on technology selection and universal design principles.

The exemplar case will be the construction of a virtual fetal pig dissection for senior level biology classes.

Hate is the New Black - Social media, Fake News, and Combating Intolerance
The average teenager checks their phone 95 times a day to read news from social feeds, friends, and questionable sources. The ‘facts’ which we take in can be biased untruths exemplifying an intolerance for humanity and its differences. A democratic society, comprised of global citizens, includes forming opinions based on a healthy curiosity about other cultures. Yet, hate in BC is on the rise as white supremacist groups target young people online, increasing their numbers – compromising our democracy and human rights. In this workshop we’ll investigate the current trend toward hate and divisiveness and will use the online, free, humanities resource Voices into Action. Plus, we’ll investigate online trends, social media influences, fake news, and develop fact seeking research competencies. We’ll align with the new curriculum by facilitating disciplinary thinking skills through inquiry and research practices on highly topical issues influencing the Canadian cultural fabric.

Adventures in Gamified English
How can teachers disrupt traditional educational paradigms and increase student engagement by incorporating a gamification construct to enhance existing online learning experiences? I tried to answer this in both my online and blended classrooms, and this presentation will discuss what has worked, what hasn't, and what I would recommend to others considering this innovative approach. On-Line Performing and Athletic Arts Courses: A Collaboration
Coilean Arts Inc. has embraced the new performing arts curriculum and the Ministry's vision of students learning outside of traditional classrooms.
