Why not take a fresh look at content authoring in Moodle? Teachers both love and hate building with Moodle books. Our presentation will show how a series of Apple iBook templates can be duplicated in specially formatted Moodle books using the bootstrap framework. We will use a little css and our prepared resources of code snippets to demonstrate how far we were able to go with the bootstrap framework. People with a lttle code editing experience should enjoy this session the most but everyone wanting to take a peak under the hood is welcome to join us as well.

Lab experimentation is crucial to maturing inquiry in the sciences. DL has a unique challenge in bringing the practical and serendipitous experience of the lab to students via the Internet. At SIDES, we moved past the idea of pantomiming real-world labs and embraced a structure and delivery that plays to the web’s strengths while delivering on the core value-proposition of laboratory experience.

This presentation will show our results and discuss the design thinking that informed them. It will pay specific attention to connecting best-practice theory with practical implementation, with a focus on technology selection and universal design principles.

The exemplar case will be the construction of a virtual fetal pig dissection for senior level biology classes.

In this session, we'll discuss our goals around resource development. As we come to the end of the curriculum updates (whew.....), it's time to discuss where we want to be in 5 years with online resources.

Attendees will discuss existing plans and help mold future strategies. We'll discuss general goals and hit specifics in each topic area (in break-out groups).

Come and hear the story behind the Kumuni language courses. Session attendees will get a look at how the courses work in practice and information about them, along with what everyone can learn from the courses’ creation about student empowerment.

I like to think of educators as “Imaginators.” For the first time in history, we have the power to invite learners to use their personal stories and passions to help shape their learning experience. Learning how to share our personal narrative is a crucial skill available to anybody wanting to learn about themselves, build relationships, and make connections with your fellow human beings. Learn how to ask the kinds of questions that invite others to share their stories. Develop the habits of introspection that offer a gateway to deeper learning. Help your learners identify their skills, strengths and passions and unite them in a unique educational experience!

The average teenager checks their phone 95 times a day to read news from social feeds, friends, and questionable sources. The ‘facts’ which we take in can be biased untruths exemplifying an intolerance for humanity and its differences. A democratic society, comprised of global citizens, includes forming opinions based on a healthy curiosity about other cultures. Yet, hate in BC is on the rise as white supremacist groups target young people online, increasing their numbers – compromising our democracy and human rights. In this workshop we’ll investigate the current trend toward hate and divisiveness and will use the online, free, humanities resource Voices into Action. Plus, we’ll investigate online trends, social media influences, fake news, and develop fact seeking research competencies. We’ll align with the new curriculum by facilitating disciplinary thinking skills through inquiry and research practices on highly topical issues influencing the Canadian cultural fabric.

Students from VIU's Masters of Education (Leadership) program will present their recent research and Major Project design topics. Student design and development supporting blended and mobile delivery in K-12 and Post-Secondary environments will be shared.
1) How Can an Online Resource Toolkit Support International Students in the Successful Transition from Post-Secondary Studies to the BC Workplace?

The purpose of this Major Project was to connect international students to their BC communities and assist with providing relevant employment opportunities by providing an online toolkit as a resource to develop personal pathways to employment. Educators and prospective employers are also encouraged to use this toolkit to educate themselves and support international, Canadian-trained student in their intentions to remain in BC

2) Applying the Community of Inquiry (COI) Framework to Support Non-Graduated Adults via a Blended Delivery Model.
The purpose of this applied research project was to create a blended delivery context in which to shift existing online-only programs for non-graduated adults in order to sustain learner motivation and engagement. This was accomplished by implementing the Community of Inquiry framework to increase cognitive, social and teaching presences to promote engagement both through connection to other learners as well as through connection to relevant learning and discourse by means of a bridging online resource- accessible to assist in online and face-to-face learning.

3) Increasing Student Engagement in Existing Online Learning Experiences through Incorporation of a Gamified Framework
This presentation showcases Leslie’s MEdL Major Project which has two components. First is a website designed to inform educators about Gamification and ways it can increase student engagement by increasing student autonomy. Second is a sample English 12 Gamified course, which puts theory into action by gamifying an existing online course.

BC's curriculum in competency-based which means we need to rethink our assessment practices. This presentation will discuss the concepts behind competency-based assessment, provide some food-for-thought about redesigning learning opportunities to showcase competencies, and provide a look at the MyEd BC Standards Based Gradebook as a tool to track three-dimensional assessment.

This will be a present, question, discuss session.  Come prepared to talk with your table, speak out, and think hard about a change of assessment practice.

The presentation will provide educators with a set of strategies for teachers to assist students and parents to navigate through the online world of educational courses and programs at the elementary level. "How do I do this?", is a common question from parents and educators looking at engaging in the educational model of online learning for elementary students.

How can teachers disrupt traditional educational paradigms and increase student engagement by incorporating a gamification construct to enhance existing online learning experiences? I tried to answer this in both my online and blended classrooms, and this presentation will discuss what has worked, what hasn't, and what I would recommend to others considering this innovative approach. (*Note, I am a member of the WCLN and applied my gamified framework to the English 12 course they offer - with adaptations)

Pippa Davies (HCOS Learning Commons Director) and Cynthia Duncalfe (Curriculum Consultant) will share their story of how they developed their new website, and launched a new learning commons system. They will share aspects of creating a vibrant, inviting website, online book clubs, contests, workshops, and digital tools, that work to bridge the collaborative gap. We will make time for your thoughts and suggestions.

This presentation reflects the road traveled by Edward and his small team as they build Yukon's first, and only, online school. The discussion will highlight the challenges, risks, and successes experienced as the team builds from scratch a program that is centered on the relational aspects described by the Community of Inquiry Framework. Edward will describe trials and tribulations of creating a synchronous approach to meet the Frameworks goals and what the future holds for this fledgling school.

In this session, we'll look at how the SMS and other WCLN plugins can be used to improve communications within your district. Your students, parents, and local counselors can all have 24/7 access to their corresponding students. Better communication leads to better programs, better relationships with schools, and better audits.

Explore, hands on, how the learning platform FAME is used by everyone to learn about Art, Coding & Technology,  Rhyanon Logan-Goyette (Langley Schools/Uconnect) will demonstrate how it enables teachers to expand their offerings to students into fields they had never dreamed of. This session will explore the design and development of the course, "Achieving Integrated Marketing and Sales Plans" developed for Schulich Executive Education Center, and the recipient of 2018 IELA Award for Best Blended learning solution.

In a sense, the educational process common throughout the last two centuries has been predicated on an adversarial role. The student must prove his understanding to someone empowered to assess that learning and deem it as acceptable or in need of revision. What can educators at all levels do to combat or alleviate this inherent conflict? Education is a service industry staffed by professionals - how do we combat conflict as professional service providers? How can we develop a healthy partnership between home and school?

The presentation will include what the presenter has done as well as leave time for discussions and participation in some role play activities. Educators at all levels should either find something worth considering or bring their own worthwhile thoughts to the discussion.

 

Learning at Navigate: Two teachers and one administrator will share stories about their work at Navigate. This diverse and blended school offers a variety of educational programs for K-12 students across BC.
